ASTM A 516 or ASME SA 516 grade is one of the most popular steel grades.

It is primarily intended for use in welded pressure vessels where notch toughness is important. These grades cover a range of tensile strengths from 55 - 90 MPa and this versatility explains much of the specifications popularity. 

For plates thinner than 40mm normally supply as rolled. Plates above 40mm thick are normalised. For A 516 grade 70, which is one of most popular steels, the ASME standard composition is as follows (dependent on grade)

ASTM A516 specification steel is used throughout the oil and gas, chemical and power generation industry and can be tested to exceed your specified requirements. HIC Testing is one such requirement as this material is used commonly in sour service/ wet h2s corrosive environments and so knowing how susceptible the material will be to hydrogen sulphide corrosion is imperative.

ASTM A516 Standard steel plates are intended for use in pressure vessels where increased strength is important. We can supply:

• Thickness: from 6mm to 150mm
• Width: from 1,500mm to 2,500mm
• Length: from 6,000mm to 12,000mm

 

Technical conditions :

1) Ultrasonic tested as per SA 578 or any other as per requirement
2) MTC acc to EN 10204 / 3.2 
3) Charpy Impact tested at -20 / - 46 DegC.
4) Furnace Normalised
5) BQ Plates with IBR form IV

 

Mill Test Certification of Carbon Steel Plates :

The carbon steel plates come with mill certification in accordance with EN10204 3.1 or EN10204 3.2. Our plates are fully traceable, usually with hard stamping and we welcome any third party or customer inspection if required which can be arranged with the client.

ASTM A516-70 PLATE

 

Characteristics :

ASTM A516-70 plate is a medium carbon alloy designed for use in pressure vessels and boilers. It contains manganese, phosphorus, sulfur and silicon at the highest levels allowed by the ASTM, to produce the strongest carbon steel plates specified by the ASTM. It is a high strength metal, is easy to fabricate and can be securely welded. A516-70 plate also has good corrosion resistance.

A common trade name for A516-70 plate is PVQ Plate. A516 plate is also available in grades 55, 60, and 65.

 

Applications :

A516-70 plate is used to fabricate low-to-medium pressure vessels, boilers and processing equipment.
