Stainless Steel Grade SMO 254 is a Very High End Austenitic Stainless Steel. It is designed with a combination of impact toughness resistance to chloride stress corrosion cracking, and pitting and crevice corrosion with strength that is twice that of the stainless steel 300 series.

Ultra 254 SMO is a 6 % molybdenum and nitrogen-alloyed austenitic stainless steel with extremely high resistance to both uniform and localized corrosion. This product was developed especially for oil and gas offshore platforms and the pulp and paper industry.

The high molybdenum content of 254 SMO Seamless Tubes can lead to an increased oxidation rate at annealing and as a consequence rougher surface finish after pickling than standard stainless steels. 254 SMO Welded Tubes has a good weldability and the methods used for welding conventional austenitic steels are used. 254 SMO EFW Tubes is substantially stronger than the common austenitic grades, but is also characterized by high ductility and impact strength. In new-fangled construction, 254 SMO ERW Tubes has been establish in a lot of cases to be a theoretically acceptable and more cost effectual substitute for additional nickel-based alloys along with titanium. In 254 SMO Tubes, post-process annealing is required to re-attain maximum corrosion resistant properties.

For certain applications, grade 254 SMO has been reported to be a cost-effective substitute for high nickel and titanium alloys. It is known to possess excellent workability as well.

Welding :

The weldability of 254 SMO is good. Welding should be undertaken without preheating, and if correctly performed there will be no need for any subsequent heat treatment. Suitable methods of fusion welding are manual metal-arc welding with covered electrodes and gas-shielded arc welding, mainly by means of the TIG and MIG methods.

Since the material is intended for use under severe corrosive conditions, welding must be carried out with care and followed by thorough cleaning to ensure that the weld metal and the heat-affected zone maintain the best possible corrosion properties.
