A286 is an austenitic, non-magnetic, iron-base super-alloy in its annealed condition. It is used in applications that require corrosion resistance and high strength up to 1300 degrees F. It is also useful for lower stress applications at higher temps. The way to develop mechanical properties of A-286 is through solution annealing and precipitation hardening. Another way to achieve high strength levels is when A-286 is aged after cold working.

Incoloy Alloy A-286 (sometimes referred to as A286 stainless steel) is a nickel and iron-based, austenitic superalloy that is useful for applications requiring high strength and corrosion resistance up to 1300ËšF (704ËšC), and for lower stress applications at higher temperatures. The mechanical properties of this alloy are developed by suitable solution annealing and precipitation hardening treatments.Â
This alloy has excellent high temperature oxidation resistance and is designed to maximize creep and stress rupture properties, with some reduction in strength.  A-286 material can attain high strength levels when aged after cold work, and has wide applications in high temperature fasteners and springs.
For many decades, stainless steels have been a popular material for modern fasteners, providing good strength and long term resistance to corrosion. Manufacturing processes have made them economical and ubiquitous, but they cannot match the strength of alloy steel bolts and fasteners. 4xx grades of stainless steel had the strength, but not the corrosion resistance of austenitic 3xx grades, and A-286 was one of the earliest and most versatile nickel alloys used to replace these stainless steels in high strength fastener applications.
It is a high Cr-Ni alloy (with crucial additions of molybdenum and titanium) capable of retaining high strength at temperatures up to 1000F and can be heat treated to a high tensile strength. Our A-286 round bar stock and sheet formulations are ideal for manufacturing hex bolts, nuts, screws and washers.
The advantages of cold working A286 can optimize total use of the material while increasing strength. Hot working and forming of A286 is sometimes used for larger diameter fasteners where it remains more resistant to deformation than 3xx grades of steel. It is somewhat more difficult to machine than these grades, but still easier than other nickel based precipitation-hardening alloys like 718, and is most often machined in full or partially aged condition.
Welding A-286 is mainly done in thin walled sections, as heavier sections are susceptible to hot cracking. AMS 5858 is designed and supplied for welding.
A-286 is also frequently used in gas turbines for low pressure buckets and first and second stage turbine wheels, as it retains strength and corrosion resistance at high temperatures. This also makes it ideal for afterburner construction and exhaust nozzles. A-286 material is also used by automotive manufacturers in exhaust valves and manifold fasteners for its tensile strength, creep strength and corrosion resistance.
