EN24 also Known as 817M40 is high tensile alloy steel famed for its wear resistance properties and in addition where high strength properties are required.

EN24T steel is a popular grade of through-hardening alloy steel due to its excellent machinability in the "T" condition. EN24T is used in components such as gears, shafts, studs and bolts, its hardness is in the range 248/302 HB. EN24T can be further surface-hardened to create components with enhanced wear resistance by induction or nitriding processing.

817M40T - EN24T steel is high tensile alloy steel renowned for its wear resistance properties and also where high strength properties are required. EN24T is used in components subject to high stress and with a large cross section. This can include aircraft, automotive and general engineering applications for example propeller or gear shafts, connecting rods, shafts, studs and bolts aircraft landing gear components.

In addition to the above, EN24T is capable of retaining good impact values at low temperatures, hence it is frequently specified for harsh offshore applications such as hydraulic bolt tensioners and shipborne mechanical handling equipment.

EN24 sections larger than 250mm may still be available in the quenched and tempered condition, but it should be noted that a fall-off in mechanical properties may be apparent approaching the centre of the bar.

It is therefore recommended that larger sizes are supplied in the annealed (softened) condition, and that quenching and tempering is carried out after initial stock removal.  This should achieve better mechanical properties towards the core.

 

Form of Supply :

Applications of EN24 / EN24T / 817M40 :

EN24 was originally introduced for use in the motor vehicle and machine tool industries for gears, pinions, shafts, spindles and the like. Later its applications became much more extended. Suitable to produce parts for such as locomotives, cranes, rolling mills, coal cutting machinery etc. where good strength and fatigue resistance is called for. Other applications for EN24 and EN24T are found in die casting and hot metal working, such as die bolsters, racks and pinions, angle pins for pressure die casting, hot stamping dies for aluminums stamping, die beds for steel stamping, lower temperature nut, bolt and rivet heading dies, large section drop forging dies. It is widely used in the plastic and rubber molding industries for moulds (particularly rubber moulds), hob retaining rings, patens, retaining rings for built up moulds, stop pins for moulds. For moulds EN24 is normally supplies hardened and tempered to ‘T’ condition. If a higher hardness is desired EN24T should be annealed and then heat treated to the required hardness.

 

Working and Heat Treatment:

  • Forging within the temperature range 1100⁰/850⁰ Celsius
  • Anneal at a temperature of 760⁰ Celsius, soaking for four hours after reaching temperature
  • Normalising is not applicable
  • Hardening by oil quench at a temperature of 820⁰/850 Celsius after soaking through
