What is 8620 Round Bar ?

SAE / AISI 8620 Alloy is a Low Carbon Nickel Chromium Molybdenum Alloy. The nickel content contributes to case toughness and core toughness, while the chromium and molybdenum support carburizing, to give good surface hardness and wear.

AISI / SAE 8620 Steel is known as Case Hardening Steel and has Low Alloy Nickel, Chromium and Molybdenum, generally supplied in as rolled condition with a maximum hardness HB 255max. 8620 Round Bars have good internal strength and High External Strength, which makes it highly wear resistant. SAE / AISI 8620 steel round bars have higher core strength than other grades like 8615 and 8617. 8620 alloy steel round bars are flexible during hardening treatment which enables improvement of case/core properties. Pre hardened and tempered (Uncarburized) 8620 alloy steel can be further surface hardened by nitriding but it will not respond satisfactorily to induction hardening because of its low carbon content. Alloy Steel 8620 round bars are suited for applications which require a combination of toughness and wear resistance. This grade is commonly supplied in Round bars.

Hot Rolled 8620 Round Bars :

Hot rolled (HR) 8620 bar is a low carbon nickel chromium molybdenum alloy is a low cost steel with good carburized properties.  The nickel content contributes to case toughness at high strength with above average core toughness.  The chromium and molybdenum support the proper formation of carbides resulting in good surface hardness and wear.  It is the most widely used carburizing alloy.

Cold Drawn 8620 Round Bars :

Cold drawn (CD) 8620 bar is the most widely used carburizing alloy.  The nickel content imparts good toughness and ductility, and the chromium and molybdenum increases hardness penetration and wearability.  The balanced alloy’s hardening to produce a strong tough core and high case hardness.  It machines at 110 sfm and has good welding qualities.

8620 HR Alloy Bars :

HR 8620 steel bar is a low carbon nickel chromium molybdenum alloy with good carburized properties, formability, and weldability. This grade is a low-cost steel that is the most widely used carburizing alloy. Due to its nickel content, this grade has high strength case and core toughness.
